Dr.Dwayne Wright

As an educator, I am dedicated to engaging, encouraging, challenging, and inspiring my students in every conceivable manner. My objective is for my students, as well as any student I encounter, to develop into the most competent professionals and individuals they can be. Central to my teaching philosophy is a learner-centered, student-focused approach. I contend that learning occurs when students' prior knowledge is activated and expanded within a culturally responsive and socially inclusive intellectual environment.

My teaching philosophy is informed by the developmental psychology of sociocultural theory, which encapsulates many of my fundamental beliefs about the classroom. This theory posits that human mental functioning is a socially facilitated process, organized by cultural artifacts, activities, and concepts. According to sociocultural theory, all learning is a social and cognitive process through which individuals become increasingly adept at participating in activities within a social context.

Consequently, I perceive my role in the classroom as the "chief development officer," tasked with ensuring that my students complete my course with an enhanced ability to conceptualize and apply theories with minimal assistance. Furthermore, I adhere to the pedagogical principles advocated by Harvard Professor Eleanor Duckworth. As a result, many of my students initially find my classes more challenging than they are accustomed to, but ultimately more impactful than most of their other courses.
